Trend watch from the UK and Europe for Spring and Summer
I find it’s good to see what people in the streets are wearing overseas as that’s what’s selling! They of course are a season ahead of us. We can read magazines, look at the models in the shop windows and wander through huge department stores and it all gets a bit overwhelming .. What to pick? So many choices!
We will start with trends and how to put it altogether.
Fresh, light and bright, greens and lots of blue and powder blue. Chambray denim is very popular. The other option that is always popular is neutrals (white, taupe, greys) Yellow accents, for example in handbags. Or sandals. Metallics in tops and shoes.
Stripes, block colours, not a lot of florals. There is tribal influence with feathers printed on fabrics coming through. Also sheer, checks and spots too.
Crop tops very simple and in a more boxy style. They look great worn with skirts long and short, wide leg pants. Chanel style jackets (no collar) and shirts were very strong, in every fabric, leather, cottons, and denim.
A light tencel type Denim in dresses, jackets, skirts. Teenagers and children wearing a lot of it too.
Jeans in a distressed colour. A lot of dropped crutch jeans and pants. (wear with shorter tops and sweatshirts) A lot of pants had elastic at the ankle and are very flattering. Shorts are making a comeback from Bermuda to culottes. Wear the style that suits your legs.
The coloured Capri pant is still in evidence with the looser tops and often longer at the back. A Great style if you have narrow thighs. Or wear a neutral coloured Capri with a dress for an updated look instead of wearing leggings.
The straight through shirt dress is huge worn over narrow pants, or bare legs and often trainers on the feet. Very comfy for hitting the streets.
Mostly the styles were very simple and uncluttered. Add interest with jewellery and beads or in the summer I prefer bracelets or cuffs.
The styles were a lot looser and natural fabrics like linen mixes, cottons or silks. I didn’t see many tight clothes, only on women who shouldn’t be wearing them.
A line or quite full skirts, mid thigh or to the knee (mid thigh only for the young girls). There were still a lot of long skirts. The mid length was showing a bit with tucked in shirts, great on the tall slim woman. Wear cardis with your skirts.
The biggest trend is flats! High shoes mainly worn for social occasions.
Ankle boots in greys and lighter colours worn from spring on with bare legs and with dresses.
Sandals in thicker straps and metallics. Birkenstocks are in.
If sandals had any heels they were a block heel and 2 -3 inches high. More of the 60’s influence.
Lace up flat shoes, they look great with dresses too.
Adidas and Nike had the best colours for a fashion sneakers which was worn with everything! (Lighter colours with lighter clothes).
So branch out try something new and keep elbowing your style. A good rule of thumb to ask yourself when you are shopping is:
Can you wear it 3 ways? For 3 different occaisions for at least 3 years?
